Many fanciers tell stories of those birds that they sold or were going to cull that ended up being super breeders. They just needed to be a little patient with them. Erica is one of those birds for me. I had someone offer to buy Erica from me and I was about to sell her but decided against it. Because I have taken very few eggs from her, I felt I hadn't given her a chance to prove herself. I have more hens than cocks and I have not previously used the bull system, so I have had several top quality hens sitting in the hen loft because I haven't had enough cocks to pair them with.

In 2003, my first season breeding from Erica, she produced one of my top racers, while paired to Kuzko. But because of Kuzko's success with so many different hens, I paired him with other hens and Erica got lost in the shuffle. I sent Erica to another loft to pair her to a full brother to Mr. Aristona (I am now breeding from those birds). But when I brought Erica back to my loft, she sat in the hen loft and I didn't raise one round from her for my race team in 2004. One of her children produced a Hall of Fame young bird in 2004. Needless to say, from now on, she will not spend most of the time in the hen loft during breeding season.
